Wilbert Aunzo – The DanceSport Kid

He was a scavenger…lost his father when he was 10. He grew up with his mother and two older brothers who are drug addicts…in and out of prison. He made a choice to live a better life and reach for his dreams through dancesport…This is a video produced by TheStoryFactory. Thank you, DTCC, Edward and Eleanor Hayco, April Tudtud Ramos, Phideocebu, Jeff Haddelton, Pearl Cañeda, Wilbert’s mom, and everyone who took part and helped in completing this project. Biggest thanks, of course to Wilbert Aunzo, for sharing and trusting us with his life story.

Wilbert Aunzo, also known as “The DanceSport Kid,” is a Filipino dancer who gained fame for his impressive dancing skills and his inspiring life story.

Born and raised in a poor family in Cebu City, Philippines, Wilbert discovered his passion for dancing at a young age. Despite the challenges he faced, such as a lack of resources and support, he persisted in pursuing his dream of becoming a professional dancer.

Wilbert’s breakthrough moment came when he joined the Philippine team that competed in the World DanceSport Federation World Cup in Beijing, China in 2014. He and his dance partner, Pearl Marie Cañeda, won a gold medal in the junior division, making them the first Filipino dancers to do so.

Since then, Wilbert has become a role model for young dancers in the Philippines and around the world. He has won numerous awards and competitions, including the DanceSport Council of the Philippines’ Junior Latin Champion and the Asian DanceSport Council’s Asian Open Latin Youth Champion.

Wilbert’s success story has also inspired many people outside of the dance world. He has used his platform to raise awareness about the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving one’s goals, no matter how difficult they may seem.

Wilbert continues to dance and compete, and he hopes to one day represent the Philippines in the Olympics. His story is a testament to the power of hard work, passion, and dedication in achieving success, no matter where you come from.
